TL;DR
Most businesses know they should be tracking their numbers, but few actually do it consistently. This post breaks down a simple scorecard approach that helps you stay intentional about the areas of your business that matter most.

How many leads did you get last month? How many website visitors? What is your conversion rate?
If your immediate thought is “I’m not sure…”, you’re not alone.
The hard truth is that even though most businesses know how important this is, far too many don’t make it a priority.
Not because they don’t care, but because they are already juggling too many things and don’t have an easy way of managing the information.
Being completely transparent, I’m guilty of this myself.
I’ll start off strong, then get busy working on client projects and before you know it, I’ve forgotten to track anything.
What I find helps is to think of business like a competitive sport.
Just like in sports, you need to keep a scorecard.
What is on that scorecard depends on what areas of your business you want to focus on most.
For me, I tend to focus on sales and marketing activities.
The key is to start simple, and over time develop scorecards for each area of your business.
The more points you rack up, the more likely you are to win the game.
So what do you track?
Think about an area of your business that you feel uncertain about.
Let’s keep things simple and use your website as the example. Your website scorecard may track things like:
- Visits
- Leads/Inquiries
- Bounce Rate
- Traffic Sources
- Content Published
You decide what matters most to you.
Once you start collecting this information, the important next step is to review it and decide what happens next.
If the numbers are positive, keep doing what you’re doing. If you feel like they need improvement, strategize on how to improve them.
Month after month, review your progress and adjust as needed.
How can you record data for your scorecard?
If you’re just starting out, keep it simple and use a spreadsheet.
In most cases, this does the trick and keeps things flexible as you learn what is most important for your business.
If you want to get more technical, there are business intelligence (BI) dashboard tools that can also be set up.
The more you measure, the more intentional you can be in your business.
The businesses that grow aren’t always the ones with the biggest budgets or the best product or service. They’re the ones paying attention.
A simple scorecard won’t run your business for you, but it will make sure you’re never flying blind.
Don’t have the time or resources to manage this internally?
